Understanding the Process of Taking a CLEP Test
Many college students would welcome any method that would help them obtain their degree more quickly or for less money. CLEP (College Level Examination Program) exams allow college students to obtain credits for knowledge they already possess. Using the CLEP program, students can skip general introductory courses, free up time to concentrate on work, family, community, or academic pursuits, and often accelerate their degree completion.

Students interested in CLEP should first find out their college of university’s specific CLEP policies. College or university academic counselors can provide information to students about their college’s specific CLEP policies such as the exam score required to obtain credit and which CLEP tests will meet specific degree course requirements. After determining their college’s CLEP policies, students should determine which exam to take. With 34 different CLEP exams offered by the College Board, the company that oversees CLEP, and over 2,900 colleges and universities accepting credit for CLEP, students are likely to find that they, too, can earn credit through these exams.

After determining which exam to take, the student can begin to prepare for the CLEP. Students may find that they already possess the knowledge required to attempt an exam. This knowledge may have been obtained through cultural pursuits, job training, or prior coursework, such as an AP (Advanced Placement) high school class. Students who already possess knowledge of a subject can go ahead and register for their CLEP. However, students should not be intimidated or discouraged if they need to take an exam in a subject in which they have little or no previous knowledge. Many students can quickly acquire the knowledge required to obtain a qualifying CLEP score through independent study. Excellent resources are available to assist students in the CLEP preparation process. These study aids include resources such as online study systems, college textbooks, CLEP study guides, and practice exams.

Once students determine the study resources that meet their needs and develop and implement a study plan, they will have a good idea of the time frame they need to complete the preparation process. Often, a student who devotes several hours a day to studying can be ready for the CLEP in two to four weeks. Some students may find that they have two or three entire days to devote to diligent studying and can prepare for the CLEP very quickly.
With a study plan, timeframe, and resources in place, the student can register for the CLEP. With approximately 1,300 test centers located across the United States and abroad, students will likely find that they will not have to travel far to take their exam. Students can find the list of available test centers by contacting the College Board directly or searching online.

After identifying a test center in their area, students can contact the site directly to find information about scheduling the CLEP, fees involved with testing, and completing the registration process. Students should know that there is a $72 exam fee payable to the College Board as well as a small non-refundable administrative fee, usually around $15, that is payable directly to the test center.
The CLEP testing fees represent huge savings when compared to the ever-rising cost of college tuition. Understanding the steps involved with taking a CLEP can be highly beneficial to students who choose to use this amazing educational resource to earn credits toward their degree.
